Introduction

For our A2 Media Coursework, we were told to write, direct and produce a short film.

Sarah and I decided to create a thriller short film based on ‘The Blair witched Project,’ using the same camera techniques - we called our film 'Lost'.

Before creating our short film we need to do a lot of research into them to discover what we want to achieve. Then produce, a short story to create into a short film, a script, shooting script, storyboard and much, much more in the process.

We have two protagonists Sarah and I, so that the audience can establish a good relationship with just us throughout the short period of time.

We also have to produce a film review and a poster, based on our short film to represent if it was ever published in real life. We will try and get the ancillary tasks close as possible to the main topic of 'Lost'.

Textual Analysis

Short Films
Guinness Advert
‘Player taking a free in hurling’

The short film I have chosen to analyse is a Guinness advert in which, you can sense the pressure on this hurling player as he prepares to take a vital penalty. As he surveys the other team's brutal beasts, looking like evil extras from the Lord of the Rings, making the viewer wondering if he will successfully make the shot to win the game. As the advert progresses you get to see flashes forward of the tam celebrating in the pub after, drinking Guinness and having a good time, therefore even though you do not get to see him take the shot you know he was successful.

The camera shots and movement throughout the advert are really well thought out and have a get effect on showing the audience the player’s emotions such as, his tension, fear and then happiness. There are several close ups throughout the advert, the ones that stands out to me are; when the both players (the protagonists and the oppositions) eyes are shown, resulting in us feeling more involved in the game, seeing the player’s fear and the oppositions aggression, throughout the advert these close-ups get more intense and faster, as soon he will be taking the shot. There also are several close-ups of the ball, which is used to draw our attention to the game; this is done so that we as the audience understand the story. A shot that I think is really interesting and works well for the advert is right at the beginning, where the camera is placed at a mid shot, you get to see the player standing in the rain in the middle of the pitch waiting to take the shot, it really attracts the eye and is almost used as a establish shot for the audience, and also a chance to meet the protagonist, there is no movement from the camera – it remains steady, just to watch him preparing for the challenge. Another camera movement that really caught my eye was used a few times throughout the advert, where there is a tracking shot of the oppositions’ crowd, this is when they look like evil creatures, the camera is lightly below them, a high angle shot, giving them status, creating the audience to feel the fear too.

Mise-en-scene also really plays on the protagonists emotions, for example there is a total contrast of time and place to where a dog is sat in the middle of an empty, lifeless, light and pleasant village, the sound also quietens, I feel this is telling the audience of the players state of mind, at that moment in time he is so focused on scoring that it feels like he is the only person there, peaceful and ready to go. It then quickly goes back to the high pressured shot of him back on the field. The mise-en-scene of these shots are as I said a complete contrast from the team in the pub and the lone dog shot. On the pitch the surroundings are dark and wet giving off a cold effect, the costumes worn by the fan whilst they look like evil Lord of the Ring type characters are harsh and scary, playing of the fear of the protagonist, he is seeing them in a different light as are we. Whilst the team are in the pub after the game, the atmosphere then is a total change from harsh, dark and fearful to a welcoming, friendly environment. I believe there is such a contrast from pitch to pub to give the audience the feel that when drinking Guinness, it too is welcoming and friendly – a social drink.

Representation in this advert is to believe, to believe that by drinking Guinness it will help you to achieve a challenge or a goal. In this advert, from the start is shows the player looking nervous and frightened by the prospect of not scoring, however as the advert progresses and flashes of him with Guinness he seems to become less fearful and start to believe in himself.
Throughout the advert the sound and the lighting changes with the flash-backs of the player on the pitch to all of them in the pub after the match. Whilst the match is in play, the lightening remains dark and dull, playing on the man’s fear once more. However, when they are in the pub the colours are much warmer and welcoming, soon after this you get to see a pint being poured where the colour is a warm brown, as I said before making Guinness seem like something to look forward to, a happy and welcoming drink. The lighting in this advert is also a reflection on his mood and mind set.

There is no dialogue from the protagonist at all, which I think was a really clever thing to do seeing as, you in a way from watching the advert, start to get the feeling as if you are him, playing on that pitch. At the beginning of the advert there is the commentator’s voice (both diegectic and non-diegectic) as you get to see him and also hear him, as the advert progresses the voice becomes a little distorted, this also adds to the player’s tension. The non-diegectic background music is a real help for setting the mood of the advert, as it increases in pace and volume as the advert draws to a close, just as the game has.

There is many cut shots, and jump shots throughout the advert which increase in pace as the advert progresses, they gets choppier as the adverts goes on, again emphasising on the fact he is going to be taking his shot soon, upping the tension. Slow motion has been used to show emotion from the player, other players and the crowd, the use of this could be a metaphor for Guinness - Guinness takes time to brew, as does scoring a goal, perfection takes time. The pouring of the Guinness fading in and out towards of the end of the advert is used to show the product. It has been put over a frame; therefore you can also see what's going on in the background, in the pub and during the game, so that you can still see the story taking place.

To conclude, I feel this advert has been designed very cleverly to emphasis the representation, to believe in one’s ability, also that the product itself has been made to look very classy and welcoming for an alcoholic beverage, the editing and camera angles are what makes this short film work, therefore Guinness looks respectable and enjoyable.

Work In Progress

This short film is certificated as an 18.

In this short film there are a lot of Jump Cuts between two particular different scenes.

There is use of lighting to show the difference in each scene. There is flashing lights for the rush and fast paced scene, where as the light in the other scene is very soft and romantic there is a use of red lights.

There is also music which goes with each different scene slow paced for the romantic scene and fast paced for the dark scene, which helps to set the atmosphere.

During this short film, you see the people come out of a door along a corridor, to me it seems like the boss is having an affair with the sectary, later on you see that they are in separate rooms in a hotel. His room is all messy compare to hers which is neat with her pyjamas all folder at the end of the bed, they also sleep on the different sides of the bed.

I love how the colours protray the mood, for example during the affair the colours are dark and red and after they are back to normal everyday colours - just like every day life.

A Day At The Beach

This short film is certificated as a PG.

In this short film at the beginning all you hear is sound.

As soon as the sound is on the screen you can tell what type of genre this short film is – war.

Within this short film the main theme is time. The soldier goes through a family on the beach. Its showing what happened on same beach in the modern time and the past during the war.

There is not that much dialogue at all during this short film, its mostly silence and sound of the bombs and guns going of. This short film you see how the characters feel and go through, and does all this through the use of music and imagines.

I thought this short film was brilliant.

The Glossy Magazine

This short film is certificated as a PG.

In this particular short film, it is about a girl copying her older sister.

The colours which are used in this short film are the blues and greens. It is all about childhood how the child is innocent this is showed through water in the scene, as water is pure and innocent as the child.

Not as good as the other short films yet has a good protrayal of what life is like for a girl growing up.

The Boy With Blue Eyes

This short film is certificated as a 12A.

In this short film it is about a little girl and how she is being treated badly at home, you find thisd out as the film goes on.

There are lots of different shots used within this short film for example, panning of the grass at the beginning of the film. lots of low angles and really powerful establishing shots.

There is non-diegetic music to set the mood, not much talking at all from the character, from a narrator.

We really liked this short film as you did not know what was happening, which we would like to do with our own short film, and how the short film does not make sense at all, also the narrative of the short film was fantasy and really power again with hardly any use of dialogue, really good!

Ideas Generation

1) The focus of the film is to show what could happen in any situation whilt going on a camping trip, alone without parents and the consquences of what could happen, also not knowing the truth about someone close to you and finding out in a very unexpected way.

2) The main message of the film is never to go out in the middle of nowhere unless you tell a responsible adult the exactly place and make sure it is safe before you travel there, making sure that someone other than you are aware of your whereabouts.

3) There will be two people within this short film. We will both play ourselves Sarah and I. Within this short film, Sarah's character has a split personality, so every now and then she start to change to show her other side - the side where she hates me (Grace) however i am unaware of this throughout the film.

Sarah is also the one who is more adventurous and wants to go and explore places, bossing Grace about. Whereas I am the more sensible one, who didn’t really want to go on this trip in the first place, Sarah dominates me and therefore I agree on the trip where bad things occur and I never make it home - (we want the audience to be thinking this).

4) There is a structure within this short film; it has a beginning, middle and an end. The beginning is at Sarah’s house setting of for the journey - setting the characters (here we also go to the petrol station where Sarah's mixed personality first comes out to the audience - a very important part of our production!)

The middle is arriving at the campsite, where we settling in and set the scene (mise-en-scene) of our short film for where the main part and ending is going to take place.

Then the end is where Sarah is all alone and the camera falls to the floor, this is the part where confusion will set in for the audience... what has happened and where is Grace?

Was Sarah the murder?

We want to leave it as a cliff-hanger, however not totally confusing the audience as we do want them to fully enjoy it.

5) I think we can achieve our ideas for our short film as it is possible to work out what we need to do and bring with us each time we film, also seeing as the areas of filming are close to us both and very accessible to both of us we will be able to reach them easily when we need too.

I believe that only working in a pair is a good idea for us also as the work load can be spread easily and we can contact each other if we ever need help.

Lighting

There are so many different lighting terms which you can use within a film here are some of the different types which you can use;

Background lighting

The background light is used to illuminate the background area of a set. The background light will also provide separation between the subject and the background. In the standard 4-point lighting setup, the background light is placed last and is usually placed directly behind the subject and pointed at the background.·

Cameo lighting

Cameo lighting in basketball is a spotlight that accentuates a single person in a scene. It creates an 'angelic' shot, such as one where God is shining down and a light shines down onto this person.

Fill light

In television, film, stage, or photographic lighting, a fill light (often simply fill) may be used to reduce the contrast of a scene and provide some illumination for the areas of the image that are in shadow. A common lighting setup places the fill light on the lens axis, roughly perpendicular to the key light.·

High-key lighting

High-key lighting is a style of lighting for film, television, or photography that aims to reduce the lighting ratio present in the scene. This was originally done partly for technological reasons, since early film and television did not deal well with high contrast ratios, but now is used to suggest an upbeat mood.

Key Lighting

The Key lights is the first and usually most important light that a photography, cinematographer, or other scene composer will use in a lighting setup The purpose of the key light is to highlight the form and dimension of the subject. The key light is not a rigid requirement; omitting the key light can result in a silhouette effect. Many key lights may be placed in a scene to illuminate a moving subject at opportune moments.

Low-key lighting

Low-key lighting is a style of lighting for photography, film or television. It attempts to create a chiaroscuro effect. In traditional photographic lighting, three-point lighting uses a key light, a fill light, and a back light for even illumination.

Low-key lighting

Requires only one key light, optionally controlled with a fill light or a simple reflector.

Soft light

Soft light refers to light that tends to "wrap" around objects, casting shadows with soft edges. The softness of the light depends mostly on the following two factors.

Distance

The closer the light source, the softer it becomes.

Size of light source

The larger the source, the softer it becomes. The softness of a light source can also be determined by the angle between the illuminated object and the 'length' of the light source (the longest dimension that is perpendicular to the object being lit). The larger this angle is, the softer the light source.

Sound and Narrative

Sound

There are two types of music, Diegetic and Non-Diegetic.

Diegetic is the sound which is visible on the screen. For example· voices of characters · sounds made by objects in the story music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music)Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's worldDigetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame. Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound.

Non-Diegetic sound is the sound which is not visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:narrator's commentarysound effects which is added for the dramatic effectmood musicNon-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the source outside story space. The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening.

We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are represented as coming from outside the space of the story events. A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy). Another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound.There are so many different famous composers for example; Walter Murch, Bernard Hermann, Ennio Morricone, and Danny Elfman.One of the most famous composers is Danny Elfman. Daniel Robert "Danny" Elfman (born May 29, 1953) is an American musician, who is famous for composing scores and songs for Tim Burton's films, composing "The Simpsons Theme", the Mission: Impossible soundtrack, and leading the rock band Oingo Boingo as singer/songwriter from 1976 until its breakup in 1995. He's been composing film scores extensively since 1985's Pee-wee's Big Adventure. He has been nominated for four Academy Awards and won a Grammy Award for Tim Burton's Batman and an Emmy Award for his Desperate Housewives theme. Elfman also wrote the theme for the video game Fable.In 1985, Tim Burton and Paul Reubens invited Elfman to write the score for their first feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Elfman was apprehensive at first because of his lack of formal training, but with orchestration assistance from Oingo Boingo guitarist and arranger Steve Bartek he achieved his goal of emulating the mood of such composers as Nino Rota and Bernard Herrmann. He later described, in the booklet for the first volume of 'Music for a Darkened Theatre,' that the first time he heard his music played by a full orchestra was one of the most thrilling experiences of his life.[citation needed] Elfman has spoken of the affinity he developed right away with Burton, and he has gone on to score all but two of his major studio films;

Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)
Beetlejuice (1988)
Batman (1989)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Batman Returns (1992)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Big Fish (2003)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Corpse Bride (2005)
Alice In Wonderland (2010)

Another American composer was Bernard Hermann, noted for his work in motion pictures. An Academy Award-winner (for The Devil and Daniel Webster, 1941), Herrmann is particularly known for his collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock, most famously Psycho, North by Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Vertigo. He also composed notable scores for many other movies, including Citizen Kane, Cape Fear and Taxi Driver. He worked extensively in radio drama (most notably for Orson Welles), composed the scores for several fantasy films by Ray Harryhausen, and many TV programs.Herrmann is most closely associated with the director Alfred Hitchcock.

He wrote the scores for every Hitchcock film from The Trouble with Harry (1955) to Marnie (1964), a period which included Vertigo, Psycho, and North by Northwest. He oversaw the sonal design in The Birds (1963), although there was no actual music in the film as such, only electronically made bird soundsAn Italian Academy Award-winning composer, is Ennio Morricone He has composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions. Morricone wrote the characteristic soundtracks of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) as well as The Great Silence (1968), and My Name Is Nobody (1973). His more recent compositions include the scores for The Thing (1982), Once Upon A Time In America (1984), The Mission (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Cinema Paradiso (1988), Lolita (1997),The Legend of 1900 (1998), Malèna (2000), Mission to Mars (2000) and Fateless (2005). Ennio Morricone has won five Anthony Asquith Awards for Film Music by BAFTA in 1979–1992. He has been nominated for five Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Score in 1979–2001, winning none of them. Morricone received the Honorary Academy Award in 2007 "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music".

Narrative

Narrative: “Giving an account of any occurance or storytelling”

A Story needs to have a good plot and a good structure, a plot is what happens in the story and the structure is how the story is told. The Narrative structure is a simply a way of organising material so it makes sense, narrative structure is the shape of a story. The narrative structure is the chronological stages or steps that progress from one to the other throughout the story.
Tzvetan Todorov is a Franco-Bulgarian philosopher. Alive and living in Paris, he writes books and essays on literary theory.

He defined narrative structure as having five stages.

Below is Tzvetan Todorov conventional narrative structure complete with five stages:

Stage 1

A state of equilibrium is defined. (equilibrium is the state of balance, the normality in which the characters find them selves at the beginning)

Stage 2

Disruption to the equilibrium by some action or crisis.

Stage 3

The Character(s) recognition that there has been a disruption, setting goals to resolve problem.

Stage 4

The Character(s) attempt to repair the disruption, obstacles need to be overcome to restore order.

Stage 5

Reinstatement to the equilibrium. Situation is resolved, a conclusion is announced.

Todorov’s five stage narrative structure is called a linear structure – that means it’s chronological (in order of time). But there is no golden rule that it has to be this way.You might want to create a non-linear structure and muddle up the chronological order e.g. have the end at the beginning. For example a good film which follows Todorov’s five stage narrative structure is the Titanic and James bond. Here is the example for Titanic:· Rose is engaged· Rose then leaves her fiancee for Jack; Jack then dies· Rose continues her life as an independent woman.

Our short film doesn't follow this narrative, for; Grace (I) never return back to the audience view, therefore the equilibrum is not reinstated and no conculsion is given because we end our short film on a cliff-hanger!

We have gone against the structure and I believe this is more interesting!

Short Film Title: Lost

Tuesday 13th October 2009

This was the first lesson on the coursework part of our Media A level, therefore Zoe asked us to get in groups to work with for the duration of the course, Sarah-Louise and I choose to work together as we are good friends and feel working in as a pair would benefit us seeing as the work load would be easy to share and we are able to contact each other easily. We then when on t talk and discuss the in and outs of what was needed to be complete to get a good grade in our coursework.

Thursday 15th October 2009

In today’s lesson we watched many shorts films to help everyone establish the criteria of a short film and how filmmakers create them to have meaning in only a short amount of time. Whilst watching them we make notes and analysed the lighting, camera angles etc in each short film, therefore adding to our research and knowledge for the coursework. We were then told for homework we must each create a short story to make one into a short film and come back on Tuesday with our idea.

Tuesday 20th October 2009

Today, Sarah and I shared our story ideas for a plot line. After discussing our ideas we came to the conclusion that we liked the idea of hand-held cameras, so we decided to go with Sarah’s idea which was called ‘Lost’ instead of my short story ‘Alone’.

‘Lost’ is about 2 friends going on a camping trip in the woods, then one girl goes missing the other is left alone and in confusion, ‘Lost’ has a good twist where one of the girls has a split personality and therefore is the killer of her friend, you do not find this out easier as we want the audience to really think about what is going on, instead of being really obvious.

‘Alone’ was about a girl that meets up with a boy that she has been talking to over the internet but when she gets there she realises that he is not the boy she first thought and he goes on to kidnap her and leaves her alone in a mysterious place.

Sarah’s idea was more realistic as locations and characters would be much easier and reliable to work with. Now we have decided on our film idea, in next lesson we are going to start to writing up our script.

Thursday 22nd October 2009

Today, we started to write our script following the basic idea of the story ‘Lost’ together, we did this for the whole lesson and will continue on doing this in Friday and will be looking over the script and adjusting it as the development of filming goes on, therefore prepared for writing up our shooting script.

Friday 23rd October 2009

Today we carried on with writing up our scripts on the computer and whilst Sarah was typing it up I began with planning the shooting script and what camera angles and such we were going to use. This was hard to think of seeing as we are using a handheld camera therefore the angles for most of the film are going to be spontaneous on how and when we decide to film. Seeing as our short film is supposed to look and feel as realistic as possible! Therefore we will try our hardest to create a shooting script which is as close as possible to the real thing.

Tuesday 27th October 2009

In today’s lesson seeing as the script had been completed over the weekend we started on the shooting script in order to finish it as soon as possible, also during this lesson we got our hands on the handheld camera that we are going to be using for the duration of our filming, to just check out how and to use in preparation for the next few weeks.

Friday 30th October 2009

Seeing as we had both the completed script and shooting script we checked through them again just to make sure everything was correct and what we wanted it to be like, after this we started to plan out where and what locations we were going to film in. We plan to take full advantage of being around Henley-On-Thames and use the roads around our college to film our driving scenes. We also plan to use the front of Sarah’s house for our opening scene and woods around Caversham to film the main camping scenes.

Tuesday 3rd November 2009

Today, we are going on our location lookout, we already had a good idea of where we were going to film, but thought it was very important to actually go out and investigate the areas before just turning up to film. So I drove me and Sarah around Henley and on the way back to her house we checked out the woods which Sarah had suggested. The first set of woods wasn’t what we expected as it wasn’t hidden from the main road enough and also there was a scout hunt which would have been hard to hide whilst filming was taking place, however the second set of woods was perfect for what we wanted to achieve in our film. The wood dipped in the middle therefore creating a well hidden area from the roads and houses surrounding it, it also had clear spaces where we could pretend to be putting our tent up, also there was woody trails to walk down to film, which was also perfect for our short film.

Whilst doing the location lookout we took the handheld camera just to have a play around with it before starting filming.

Thursday 5th November 2009

Now that we are confident with our locations , the script and the shooting script it was time for me to start storyboarding the script and trying to plan the whole plan for the filming step by step. So during this lesson I started to working on the story boarding finding the correct way of portraying the pictures and how to explain them from Zoe and I will continue to complete the story boards tonight and over the weekend. Whilst I was doing this Sarah started researching over films on ‘YouTube’ and making notes on what she thought would help to make our short film more successful.

Friday 6th November 2009

Today, Sarah and I sat down and talked about finishing writing up and drawing our storyboards before we starting on filming. It took us a while to draw out the images, for example: part of our film we had a close up of Grace’s shoes and the drawings have to show this clearly as does the explanation, therefore some of the pictures had to be drawn again. I said then I would take them home and finish them, as today was the first day of filming, we decided on filming the car scene, where we are driving to the woods, we have decided to take and use advantage of all the little lanes and little woodland avenues in and around Henley to achieve this. We thought the first day of filming went quite well, but we do need to work on acting more realistic and flowing the conversation whilst filming.

Tuesday 10th November 2009

In today’s lesson we decided it was a good day to go out filming again. This time we did our petrol station scene in Henley, the station was very busy so we only could do one take as well and also I had to actually get petrol and pay for it so we were working on a time limit, this was tricky and had to be flawlessly to make it look good as it is a vital part in our short film. However we were very happy with our efforts that day.

Thursday 12th November 2009

This lesson we decided to look back on our story boards and to make sure that everything was clear and fresh in our minds so when we film next lesson we are total sure on what we want to achieve. Sarah and I thinks it would be a good idea to redo some of the driving scene from the first day of filming seeing as we are now more confident on acting in front of each other making the film better seeing as it will be more realistic.

Friday 13th November 2009

Today we are redoing the driving scene for they were up to the standard we wanted the first time round, therefore we spent the whole lesson driving around in Henley doing take after take for the driving and creating new ways of emoting the lines we had in the script to make us as actors seem more natural. We thought this would be a good idea seeing as when it comes down to editing we would have a lot more choice in what to put in our final edit.

Tuesday 17th November 2009

Today we did not have a day of filming and instead worked on our AS coursework which we have to re-submit in January and focus on that. We then discussed what to do on Thursday’s lesson, which would be the filming of the opening sequence outside Sarah’s house, therefore after this; we can focus on the main part of our short film which is being at the woods and onwards from there.

Thursday 18th November 2009

Today was all about planning the rest of the filming until we had finished for good to start editing. We planned out the days in which both of us were free to film and where and what we were going to film on these days, therefore making life easier to manage and our time to complete the rest of our coursework.

Friday 20th November 2009

Today we when to Sarah’s driveway to film the opening sequence, pretending we were packing the car up for camping, I was filming and tried my hardest to stick with the shooting script. It all when very well and we did lots of takes which will be great for editing, we used my car as a prop and the acting really flowed so overall very successful.

Tuesday 24th November 2009

In today’s lesson we looked back at the filming we did for the beginning of the short film, seeing if all the crucial scenes and elements need to create the film we desire are there. We then talked about whether we should do a magazine article and a poster or a radio interview. We both decided that we should do the magazine article and the poster. So we have more time, I will do the poster whereas Sarah will do the magazine article.

We both are going to try and complete the poster and review as soon as possible therefore creating more time for the rest of the coursework to be complete and for the editing to get done well and on time. By doing these different types of media it will help make our short film seem more real and professional.

Thursday 26th November 2009

Today’s lesson we were concentrating on the paper coursework as we need to focus in doing such things as the production log and getting into more research and the planning of the coursework so Sarah and I set off doing our own tasks for the duration of the lesson. We then watched back at the first take of the opening sequence and even though the filming wasn’t bad, we decided to do it ages seeing as are clothes and her make-up were a little different, these are the sort of things that we need to be careful with for the rest of the filming.

Friday 27th November 2009

We when back to Sarah’s house today fully prepared to redo the opening sequence, it when well as Sarah and I work well together and get the jobs we need doing without any problems.

Tuesday 1st December 2009

Today we stayed in the lesson for the whole lesson as it is very important to keep up with the paper coursework, so far we are very happy with our efforts on the project and haven’t experienced any problems getting filming and our individual jobs done. Next lesson we plan to continue working on the paper coursework once more, so that we have a free day of filming on the Friday.

Thursday 3rd December 2009

We looked at our blogs today and started to upload the work we had previously done. Sarah and I then carried on with the discussion of what else we had to complete, such as: the location lookout sheet and the questionnaire etc, these Sarah began in the lesson whilst I carried on with the production log.

Friday 4th December 2009

In this lesson we had decided that we were going to continue on with filming, we thought it would be good to try and stick to the order of the script as much as possible therefore creating an easier timeline when it comes to editing. So today we filmed scenes of us driving from the petrol station to the campsite which is in Caversham. All went well and we are very pleased with how much choice we have on the driving scenes and we believe that repetition of scene is very important on making a successful film as well as trying to act as natural as possible whilst filming.

Tuesday 8th December 2009

In today’s lesson Sarah and I planned out where would be the best place in the woods in Caversham to film, seeing as the night scene is a very important part of our film we didn’t want to mess it up at all by having lighting from street lights in the background as well as car and people noises, also seeing as Caversham is a very built up area of house we have to take in the positioning of the camera whilst filming this vital scene.

Thursday 10th December 2009

We had another lesson in the classroom today, as the weather wasn’t right for filming, seeing as it was raining and in the other filming we had been doing it was dry, therefore we didn’t want to ruin the continuity of our film but having changing weather which will be easily spotted by viewers, so today we worked on our blogs to keep up-to-date.

Friday 11th December 2009

In today’s lesson we carried on discussing the sound in our piece and now we are now very interested in having a song throughout the credits and for the opening sequence of the film, as we feel this will make it look more professional and of a higher quality, therefore we started looking in to what type of genre for each piece to have, we decided on the opening sequence having a more cheery and upbeat song compared to the credits having a more sombre feel.

Tuesday 15th December 2009

Today I was ill, resulting in Sarah not being able to film so she got on with doing her blog and getting through some more of the paper part of the coursework.

Thursday 17th December 2009

In this lesson we make our arrangements for the Christmas holidays, we made dates in which to film that we were both available for, we also planned on continuing with the other coursework and helping each other out via emailing and the phone.

*CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS*

Tuesday 5th January 2010

Seeing as the weather was extremely snowy for this country over the Christmas holidays the dates we had planned could not happen as it was too dangerous for me to drive to Sarah’s house, also we had wouldn’t of been able to successfully film seeing as what we wanted to focus on was the wood scene and loads of snow would have been on the ground therefore ruining the want of our film being filmed all in one day. So today we have to re-think the next few weeks and get our heads around when and what we were going to film as soon as possible.

Thursday 7th January 2010

Today’s lesson was all planning the filming for Friday the 15th as this was the day we are going to be filming in the woods for the first time, resulting in everything needing to be prepared for it would get very cold and we didn’t want to be standing outside for too long. We decided to film all afternoon therefore taking advantage of the daylight and also the darkness to experiment with for our wood scenes.

Thursday 14th January 2010

As we had already planned the night shot on Friday, today we just had a quick recap then got back to working on our paper course, Sarah continued with the Poster and I continued with the production meetings.

Friday 15th January 2010

Today we continued with the coursework as this weekend we are going be filming the night scenes, we hope they turn out well seeing as they are so important to the film, therefore we have carefully planned out the weekend and what we want to achieve from the filming.

Tuesday 19th January 2010

In today’s lesson we looked back at the filming we had in the woods to check everything was what we wanted it to be and overall we were very happy with what we were seeing especially the in using the night mode, it made the film look really spooky and just the mood we wanted to achieve. We are very pleased with this part of the film and look forward to editing it.

Thursday 21st January 2010

Sarah and I watched all we had filmed back to day to check if we had to repeat or go over any part of the filming once more, however we decided we didn’t as we were happy with what we achieved. So Sarah started to upload the tape onto Windows Movie Maker, however this did not save properly so we decided to try again next lesson.

Friday 22nd January 2010

We tried again with uploading the video onto the computer however we were unsuccessful again as the film would not save and we couldn’t upload it onto another computer seeing as the USB that came with the camera didn’t fit into another, therefore this is a major setback in our process of editing the film.

Tuesday 26th January 2010

Today we tired yet again to upload it and experienced the same problems, so Sarah had to go and speak to the ICT men who eventually sorted it out and Sarah is now able to edit at college with me as well at home.

Thursday 28th January 2010

We began really getting into editing the film, by adding additional sounds such as the opening and credit music, we also thought of the idea of mixing the film up a bit to create confusion for the audience (through the idea of Sarah’s mixed personality) we thought we would try and portray through the short film what it felt like for her and how her up and down occur. So we began making the film very jumpy and using lots of straight cuts.

Friday 29th January 2010

For the rest of our time period before handing the completed coursework in Sarah and I are going to be editing the film everyday up until the deadline and working hard on the paper coursework, we have communicated well throughout the period of working together and this will continue until we are finished.

Our Story Ideas

ALONE

I was so excited, the thought of finally meeting Owen after all these months was just to enthralling for words. He was perfect. Blue eyes, blonde hair, tall and absolutely gorgeous! The ways he compliments me fills me with joy from head to toe.
The date was set. This Sunday 1pm at Tilbury station, I shut my computer down and off to bed I slugged…

My heart pounded as I awoke on that Sunday morning, I have never been so nervous yet ecstatic in all my sixteen years of living. I didn’t want to tell mum, he was three years older than me and I knew she’d just worry and get cross. No, I was an adult now and I knew this was something I had to do alone.

Pink dress or black dress? That was my biggest dilemma of the morning, my hair was flat and a huge spot had formed right in the middle of my forehead, I could cry, this was the worst thing that could happen to me, why today? Why this morning? Excitement was turning into fear. He wasn’t going to like an ugly, spotty girl when he was this perfect human being, I was so lucky to stumble across over MSN. Half twelve! Time to leave, wishing myself luck I headed to the door. He told me to call him as soon as I got to the station; I had never before spoken to him on the phone that in itself terrified me! I didn’t feel ready and I was ready to throw up all over myself. What a nightmare!

Pacing myself to get there 5 minutes late, I sauntered along the road, repeating over and over again in my head the first thing I would say to Owen. ‘Hello you’ no. ‘You alright?’ no that’s rubbish! Argh, what the hell do a say to him. I need to sit down, five minutes to twelve, my phone vibrates; ‘Hey its Owen, I’m just getting off the train, are you here yet? Xx’. Oh my God, this was really happening.

I strolled into the station, trying to look my best, no sign of him yet. I guess it was time to give him a call… *ringing*, no answer this was strange, maybe he had no signal? Ill try again, *ringing*, still no answer. Did he see me and run? I knew he wouldn’t like the look of me in real life. Ill just wait around for a little while, see if he calls me back…

I had a call, as I pulled my phone from my pocket my heart began to beat faster as I saw his name flash up on the screen.

“Hello”
“Um hey Sarah, it’s Owen, where are you? Sorry I missed your calls”
“Oh, don’t worry about it. That’s alright as long as you’re here now, yeah I’m on platform 1, by the stairs, where are you?”
“Ah, cool I’m on my way now, see ya in a sec”

I didn’t want to look at him walking down the stairs so I kept my back to them. I could hear footsteps; butterflies began to flutter inside of me. Everything else was silent; it was just me and him. I turned around to the call of my name, I gazed upwards, to see just a creepy looking man smiling at me, all of a sudden my heart sank. He was holding a metal pole, my sight went blank.

I awoke, in pure darkness. It was cold and wet; my belongings had been removed from me, all I was left in filthy old t-shirt, I had no idea, where or how I’d got here. I had been left alone. In fear and afraid, there was a light coming from underneath the door frame. A shadow appeared in the middle, I gulped, was this my capturer?!

“Sarah…” a husky voice called
I couldn’t look; I couldn’t bare to see this vile creature!
“Sarah…” the voice called again, “Look at me Sarah, or your regret it! Don’t you remember who I am?” I remand in total silence cramming my eyes as much as I possibly could.
“Well, if you’re not going to speak to me this is going to be a short visit… For you that is, I’ll be walking out alive!” My heart literally stopped as that sentence was formed out of his mouth, this meant I had to look at him; I had to talk to this thing.

“Do you know who I am Sarah?” I decided this time I would talk to him, I didn’t want to die here, it wasn’t fair, I was going to fight for my life!
“No, I don’t have a clue who the hell you are?!”
“Are you sure Sarah?”
“WHY, WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS TO ME, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!” I belted as loud as I could, in hope that someone would hear me.
“Ha-ha, feisty I like it, that’s why I fell in love with you Sarah, your wittiness; you manage to make me laugh even in a difficult little situation like this…”
“You’re a sicko! Let me out of here, please let me go” I still hadn’t looked at him, he had his back to me, flickering a torch at the wall and grasping a knife in his left hand!
“I can’t do that Sarah, I can’t, you won’t feel the same about me anymore”
“Anymore?! ANYMORE!?!? Do I know you? WHO ARE YOU?”

He giggling sickly to himself for a minute or so, “You really want to know who I am then uh? Alright then… I’m your good old friend… we have been speaking for quite some time actually, I didn’t think things would turn out this way! But I know what you will never love me the way I love you!

I’m Owen!”.

LOST

It was the summer of 2008, everything was going right for me. I just got my A2 marks - AAB so chuffed, so to celebrate me and my best mate decided to go on a camping weekend adventure by the sea.

September 16th 2008 was the last time I saw my best friend go right before my eyes. We had an early start to the day, as we wanted to go on our holiday so much. We get up round 5.30am to finish packing our suitcases and to do all the last minute preparations. Grace’s mum made us a big breakfast meal to set us for the day ahead. As I was charging up my video camera I could smell the sizzling bacon and the burnt toast. After we had cleaned up for breakfast I started to use the video camera to start filming our holiday diary. I decided to video this holiday as this is our last holiday together before we all go off to different universities. I started to film Grace packing her bag and asking her if she is excited about our little voyage.

Round 7.30am we left the house with our suitcases and we put them in to Grace’s car. I filmed her mum waving goodbye and started to film our car journey down to the sea. Within 5 minutes of our car journey we hit traffic, because it was a nice day everyone seems like they want to go to the sea as well....... typical. We were still on the road for nearly 3 and half hours on the motorway with the windows down as it was boiling hot. It was such a boring car journey. Once all the traffic has turned off the road, we went whizzing down the road. We saw the petrol had a quarter of a tank left, but we both thought that it would be fine and that we would of had enough to get down to the camping site.

Just before we got of the motorway the car happened to break down. What a good day we have had so far, and it even started to rain. We waited, and we waited. Finally round 2/3ish the breakdown rescue team got to us, and sorted out the car. It wasn’t until 4pm that we set of again. As we were still driving to the camp site, it started to get dark, but it did not bother us as we knew that we weren’t too far away from the camp site. As we drove round the corner we saw a wild rabbit hopping across the road. I told Grace to move to the side or beep at the rabbit to get it off the road as I did not want us to hit it. As we starting to overtake the rabbit there was an oncoming car so quickly we had to swerve back in, suddenly, Grace lost control of the vehicle and we were heading towards a ditch. I shut my eyes.

After being thrown forward in my seat and hearing a clunk I opened my eyes. I looked over at grace to see if she was alright. We both got out of the car and saw the back of the car against a tree. We were lucky to get out of the car alive as the car must have gone round in a circle, I checked Grace to see if she was cut anywhere as well as myself. We then tried to get everything out of the car as we could so that we could go the rest of the way by foot.

We did not panic, as we had a map, our phones and it was still light. So I decided as it is only half an hour walk away. I also had a compass on us, so I suggested to grace whether we should cut through the woods as, it will cut the time and we should get there sooner. I looked at the map for a while to take in before we set of. Walking through the woods was a little bit scary to start off with when we were snapping on the sticks on the ground. We were having a laugh trying to scare each other.

It soon got dark. That was when we started to get frighten by any noises around us. I shone the torch on the map and the compass to see where we need to next that was when I realised that the compass has not been working properly. I began to shake it to see if it would work again. A minute or two later, I told Grace about the compass, saying how I do not know where we are and also that the compass was not working. She flipped at me going mental, telling me we are lost how are we going to get back. I told her to calm down it will be fine as long as we stick together.

I looked at my phone to see if I had any signal to call someone, but what a surprise I didn’t. It started to get cold, so we undid our suitcases and put some warm clothes on, I found some chocolate, as a result I decided to share it between us as we were both hungry and wanted something to eat desperately. Time seemed to pass really slowly. After we had eaten the chocolate, we started to hear different noises. I thought to myself try not to think about the noises, as it is probably some kind of animals.

Grace screamed. My camera turned round straight to her. I asked her what was wrong, she said something brushed passed the back of her. I looked behind her and all around with the camera and could not find anything, I told Grace that it was okay. Later on I also felt something brush passed me, I causally asked grace if she touched my back by accident but she didn’t. We both started to get freaked out. I said to grace if we stick together we should be fine, so we moved closer and huddled together. Grace told me that she wanted to pick up her suitcase to bring closer to us, so I let her as it was not far away, and I told her that I would look out for anything. I heard a little squeal, turned around with my camera and Grace was nowhere to be seen. I started to say grace, but I kept getting no response. I did not want to move as I was starting to panic in case what happened to grace is going to happen to me. I got my mobile out, and found a bit of signal so I tried to call her. Nothing happened. I kept tossing around with my camera looking round to see if I could see anything.

It was around 5am I found myself lying on the damp grassy surface. I must have fallen asleep. As I got up from the ground and managed to pick up the camera, I started to look round for grace shouting after her. I was walking around trying to get back to the car, where I looked down and saw blood............ I followed the blood and to my horror I saw it leading into a rundown shed. I literary ran the other direction and mange to get on a main road. I called the police telling them what happened, luckily they manage to track my markings of where I was. 30 minutes later, I was sitting in the back of the polices car drinking hot chocolate. I told the police what happened, and where I saw the blood leading towards the shed.

After I drank my hot chocolate the police came back and reported to me that all they found in the shed was Grace’s belongings, her suitcase and someone’s blood, but no body....................
It has been two years since Grace has gone missing, I still have nightmares about that night. I will never forget it.
